All macintosh disk have on them a file called the desktop file. this file
helps
your
mac keep track of what files are on your disk. But when you delete a file from
a
disk
the finder doesnt remove that files intry in the desktop file. therefore the
desktop
file tends to get very unnessisarily large. Desktop File Killer will remove
this
file
and replace it with a new smaller file. Ive seen over 80K saved.

Subject: [*] Find_Stuff_102.hqx
This is version 1.0.2 of Find Stuff. It fixes some bugs in the previous
release of Find Stuff and it should replace the previous version.
The bugs that wre fixed are:
Find Stuff now works on non-color quickdraw machines.
When searching by name if you match beginning or end of the name it works
You can specify types and creators with a '^' in the name.
Minor user interface modifications
Find Stuff does require System 7.0 to run and it looks better on
machines with color quickdraw but it will work fine with out it.
Find Stuff is a program which will search for you files. It will
search most types of media (it works fine on local hard drives,
floppy disks and real AFP voluems) You can search for files
type partial file name, label, type creator, date created and
date modified. It shows a list of found items.

MATCALC
AN EASY-TO-USE INTERACTIVE
MATRIX AND LINEAR ALGEBRA PACKAGE
The capabilities of MATCALC include matrix arithmetic,
triangular factorizations, solution of linear systems, determinants
and inverses, finding eigenvalues, eigenvectors and Jordan forms,
singular value decomposition, finding zeroes of polynomials,
polynomial arithmetic and other related problems.
MATCALC may be used (as its name implies) as a simple matrix
calculator, but it is also a programming language in its own right
allowing the user to augment the extensive repertoire of predefined
MATCALC functions and procedures. There is also a well defined
interface allowing users to extend the package by seamless integration
of C language routines.
MATCALC is specially designed to handle singular matrices and
to permit selection of independent and dependent columns of a matrix.
Its design allows the user to analyze a problem in depth as well as
obtain a quick solution when necessary. These features make the package
particularly suitable for teaching linear algebra courses.
MATCALC is compact, flexible and portable. Currently it runs on
several UNIX machines as well as under VAX/VMS and MS-DOS operating systems.
It is designed to run on any system that supports the C programming language.
The number and sizes of matrices used are determined solely by limitations
of the local system.

NotifyMail v. 1.1.1 for Eudora
-------------------------
Assembled and tested by Scott Gruby (Scott_Gruby@hmc.edu)
Source code by Peter N Lewis
NotifyMail is a background only application that listens for a telnet
connection to port 1035. When it receives the connection, it sends an
AppleEvent to Eudora to check your mail. The end result (when coupled with
a .forward file on your UNIX machine) is that you will almost immediately
receive your electronic mail when it arrives on your UNIX machine. You no
longer have to tell Eudora to check your mail every X minutes.
This requires Eudora 1.4 or higher and MacTCP 1.1 or higher. Look at the
Readme file for installation instructions.
Please contact Scott_Gruby@hmc.edu if you have questions or problems with
this.

Subject: 13" Monitor Woes - Chapter 2 (Q)
Thanks to the 12 people who replied to my question about an Apple 13" Monitor
that keeps cutting out. The concensus seemed to be that a high voltage
capacitor has gone to parts heaven or is at least on its death bed.
Unfortunately, most people suggested that I get it repaired under the Apple
program that apparently was set up to take care of a batch of bad capacitors.
I neglected to state in my original message that my monitor was manufactured
in February 1988 and so is much older than the ones affected by the repair
program. (I have also checked the serial number and it doesn't match those
that qualify.)
I have called about five or six outfits that repair monitors and the going
rate for monitor repairs that DO NOT require replacement of the CRT or the
flyback transformer is $125-$130. I find it really hard to shell out those
bucks for a repair I am capable of doing myself when the part(s) will only
cost about a tenth of that. Therefore, I am repeating my request (plea) for
a schematic of the monitor or at least a simple diagram showing which
capacitor needs to be replaced (assuming it is the capacitor that is bad)
and possible sources for this part. I promise not to hold anyone liable
if I fry my monitor or myself.

Subject: 660 AV Questions
Hi folks,
maybe someone out there can give me some help with these problems:
* Converting audio CD tracks to QT movies. Freezes the mac every time,
whether I use Fusion Recorder or Simple Player. The freeze sets in as soon
as you try to access the CD, either from the Play or Convert buttons. Am I
doing something wrong?
* We would like to get better-quality capture of single frames from video.
Preferably as TIFF and with at least 256 greys (greyscale input). Are there
hardware limitations, or is there software that will give better results?
Do we need an AV FAQ, or an AV newsgroup?
Thanks in advance for any help. I'll summarise to the net if people post me
some interesting answers.
Alex
P.S. These problems aside, the 660AV is a pretty neat machine.

Subject: Apple//c ==> Mac converting files by cable
Hi,
I've noticed some messages about converting files between Apple //c and
Macintoshes. Well, this is my experience: I WASN'T ABLE TO DO IT!!
Situation:
- Apple //c with Apple Access // communications program
- Powerbook 165 with communications module of Clarisworks 2.0
- Cable RS-422 (Mac) to RS-232
- Apple //c printer cable
- I don't have Apple //c 3.5 Inch drive
I needed to convert some Appleworks files (database and word processing type)
knowing that, once on my Mac HD, I would convert them using Apple File
Exchange.
I'm not an expert about transfer protocol but by setting the SAME parameters
on both machines (BAUD rate, xon/xoff, parity, but stop, terminal emulation)
I was able to "chat" in terminal mode between the two machines, seeing on
screen what I was typing on the other machine.

Subject: A stupid question?
This is probably a very stupid question, and I'll probably be shot down in
flames for asking it, but....
Why do we have to have TWO major archive sites, each with mirrors scattered
worldwide? Surely, life would be easier with one archive site and one set
of mirrors, since that way you'd only have one place to look?
It strikes me that there's an awful lot of redundant archiving work going
on, and ftp'ers hunting for files on umich when they've only reached sumex,
say. Could this all be rationalised, or am I dreaming?
L.
[:) Currently, we at info-mac forward our uploads to the umich macgifts
list and vice versa. That way, we try to keep the archives' contents the
same. The centralized system that exists now (a few major archive sites like
info-mac and umich) along with their mirrors can't last forever. The number
of people accessing the internet is growing too fast. Many of you have
suffered the effects of this when attempting to connect to sumex-aim. There
are a number of people that ware working on a distributed archive
system. If, and when, we switch to that system, some of the redundancy will
be removed. -Gordon]

I own a Quadra 840AV & the Audiovision monitor and I experienced similar
problems. I accidently noticed that the brightness problem was solved by
wiggling the mouse ADB cable which was plugged into the AV monitor. It would
promptly go back to normal brightness. Why, I don't know. The problem with
the
audiovision icon Xed out was solved by moving the audiovision icon to top of
the
startup list so it would load first. Initially it was loading 4th or 5th for
whatever reason. (I use Now Utilities Startup manager to handle all the
control
panels and extensions).

Subject: connecting my loud powerbook to a network
Good day everyone,
Well, ever since Ive gotten my PB165c, about a month ago, Ive
noticed that the sound is just plain too loud. Before you all yell at me to
go to the sound cp, I have. Setting it from 1 to 7 gives me settings
ranging from too loud to way way way too loud, and I need sound, so a
setting of 0 is well... Anyways, anyone else have this problem? Is there a
way to set the sound to something between 0 and 1? Like maybe a control
panel that lets you use a slider control for sound volume. If not, is it
easy to hack the sound cp to do this? Am I asking too many questions? (dont
answer that!)
Okay, now for a serious question. I need to set up a very small lan

any recommendations on a book I could buy? Ive tried looking in the
info-mac archives, but I couldn't find anything that seemed to fit. Also, I
will need to be able to do remote (cross-country) management and upkeep of
this lan. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Er, isn't the VAX better suited to batch processing? I'm not sure if
what you're asking is for something to dial up the credit card
validation centre for authorization, or if you just want to run a
simple check on the credit card number. I can't help you with the
former, but I whipped together a checksum XCMD for HyperCard in half an

that are clearly wrong before ringing up for authorization.

Subject: digests
I am developing a program using both Think Pascal 4.0.2 as well as Think C
5.0.4
for some of the modules. The main part of the program is written in Pascal,
using the modules written in C as libraries. The development takes place on a
Quadra 700 under System 7.1, which is equipped with 20MByte of main memory.
While debugging, two problems with unknown reason appeared:
1.) One of the C modules uses a moveable modal dialog box as user interface.
The
appropriate DITL, DLOG and dctb resources were created using ResEdit 2.11,
which
shows the DLOG resource to be of the right type, ie. as a moveable modal box.
If one use a C environment to call the module which handles the dialog,
everything works just fine. But if exactly the same module is used as a
library
in the Pascal environment, using exactly the same resources as before, the
dialog box appears to be a non-moveable (standard) dialog box.

I am pretty sure that the creator is Microsoft Multiplan, which was killed
by Excel back in the dark ages. I do not think there is a current program
that can open them, unless perhaps an old version of Excel (but you asked
for current). I have Multiplan 1.0 or 1.1, I forget which, but it breaks
on System 6.0.7. I think you have to go back to 6.0.3 (?) or earlier before
it runs properly. The PLAN is a spreadsheet document; Multiplan can
also access its own help document, and create & read text documents
with information in the SYLK (symbolic link) format, which are read by all(?)

Subject: Floppy Condoms (Arrrrgh! Or is that too sublte?)
Sheesh! I ask for a source for 3.5" floppy sleeves, and I get all kinds
of advice (both public and private) to not bother. Not all responses,
mind. One person offered to sell me his used floppy condoms. Hoo boy,
did that tickle my funny bone. I mean there is recycling, and then there
is recycling.
Mostly I heard of what is doubtless an urban legend on how the static
electricity of the sleeves will wipe my disks. Right. It never actually
happened to any respondent, but each knows about it.
And Adam says the sleeves *introduce* crud into the disks? Help!
My experience: People see the hard-shell and think the disk is protected.
They do not note the opening in the back or the spaces around the shutter
or the vulnerablity of the shutter. I've seen crud in the openings, and
I have seen sprung shutters. The former has killed more than one disk and
at least one read head. The latter, when sufficiently subtle, gets a disk
nicely stuck in the drive.
I have never seen data loss from a sleeved disk. I have never seen crud
introduced by a sleeve. When I pass a disk to a colleague, I put it in a
sleeve. If a colleague gives me an unsleeved disk, I ream him or her. And
give the disk back in a sleeve.
Lordy, folks! Have your own religion and bless you for it. Don't try to
convert me. I live in a college town. I get enough religious types at my
door wanting to tell me God's truth. As an aside, I recall a chap who
wanted to sell me a book explaining Revelations. I told him that book was
where I found my pet. Apologies to Marty Feldman. He didn't get it. Do
none of these people have a sense of humor?
Yes, Adam et al, I know about the various commercial thingies that will
hold one or more disks. No, I will not pass them on to folks freebies.
That is goofy. I have enough problems with our budget. Besides, floppy
condoms have never given me a moment's problem. Why look elsewhere?

Just spotted a two-page ad in InfoWorld for the new Hayes modem, the

2.0 tuned up this should make the 'dialup desktop' more of a reality. Even
though the official V.34 standard hasn't been finalized these modems are
supposed to be able to communicate with other vendors who are supporting th
V.FC standard. When V.34 is finalized these will be upgradeable to that
standard and still maintain compatability with any V.FC modems in operation.
I'd say we're at the speeds where remote dialup backups for laptop owners is
becoming a realistic possibility.

Hello to all of you,
I think I will have to explain a little more my bootup problem. In our labs,
our disk drives are protected with AME software. So no student can write on
the drives. But some just boots from a floppy and then mess around in the
control panel changing defaults : date, hour, sound, etc. As this data is kept
in PRAM, AME don't stop them.
Since we couldn't find any way to lock the PRAM, and we can't just lock the
floppy drives, the only way I could think of of preventing the PRAM abuses
would be to force the Mac to boot from the disk drive EVEN if a system floppy
disk is in the floppy drive. If for some reason the Mac couldn't boot from its
disk drive, only then would it try booting from its floppy drive.
Would some of you know how to accomplish such a feat by hardware fix or soft-
ware? Or maybe another way to protect the PRAM from malicious users?
I hope this help better understand the problem.

We just installed LaserWriter 8.1.1. We are running only PostScript level
one printers > in an environment mixed with LW Driver 7.0 as well.
One person sent a MWord 5.0 document to one of the LaserWriters, that
included art created in MacDraw II and imported into Word 5.0. It printed
fine with LW Driver 7.0. When LW Driver 8.1.1 parts of the drawings were
actually repositioned. I have copies of the printouts to document this.
Any suggestions? I am not willing to switch over to 8.1.1. if the results
are so unreliable.

It seems like a nice machine for home/kid use, however, it looks

Has anyone experienced printing problems with Loodle?
I've tried version 4.0.3 and 5.2 recently, but both give me the dialog 'saving

Even the Option/Command/Escape sequence won't get out of it. This happens
under
System 7.1 on an 8Mb IIcx and a 4Mb SE/30, maybe also on an SE (can't remember

I have an old version, 3.1 I think, which prints OK, but I'd like to use the

I saw a few posts about other having problems with
using the LW 8.1.1 print driver and printing to legal size paper.
I was wondering if one of them could contact me. I am having the
same problem and am about to go back to 7.x.
One poster blasted the people who had problems with 8.1.1,
because it leaves the 7.x print driver installed. Well I tried
switching to the 7.x driver and had the same problem.
I was in Aldus Freehand, printing some signs in landscape on
a legal size paper. I made sure the page setup matched the document
prefs that I had set in freehand. I tried both print drivers. What
would happen is the text, which filled the page on the screen, would
print down about 3.5 inches on the page and then be chopped off by the
edge of the paper. I tried scale to fit and it fit it on the page, but
It still printed this 3.5-4 inches down the page, but was small enough
to not be chopped by the edge of the page. The odd thing is that if I
took a letter size piece of paper and lined it up on the one edge with
the legal size. The text had been scaled to fit on the letter size
piece of paper (or so it seemed). Again I made sure that the page set
up knew about what size and orientation the paper was. It seems to
think everything is letter size...Anyone at Apple reading this?
This worked fine before I installed the LW 8.1.1 driver.
My system is: Mac IIcx, 8M ram, system 7.0, Tunner 1.1.1, Freehand
v3.1 (I think), Laser Writer Plus (v4.22), Printing via localtalk over
phone net (But right now I only have one Mac and one printer connected,
so length is not a problem and the connectors are terminated).

Subject: Macintosh TV
It has arrived on my dear campus! The Macintosh TV is now on display
at the University of San Francisco, and boy is it a doozy. For those of you
just joining us, let me describe...
Picture an LC 520 (you know, that big all-in-one hunk of Mac that has
a 13" monitor and a CD-ROM drive built in). Paint it black. Paint it _all_
black, including the keyboard and mouse (forget, however, to paint the CD-ROM
drive black... :). Put a television tuner inside the machine. Put video input
(for the TV) on the back and add an antenna jack. Now pick up the remote
control and get ready to switch between the Mac and the TV with the push of a
button. One click, and the Mac Finder fades away to be replaced with Channel
4.
Press the Power button on the remote and you'll see the TV fade back out and
the Finder comes back in. Watch all the applications quit and the Mac
shutdown.
Drool at the sexiness of this machine. Laugh at the silliness of this toy. For
extra kicks, take a screen snapshot while the TV is showing your favorite
movie
clip. Voila! you have an image of the scene sitting on your hard drive. Don't
forget, the remote also has basic controls for your CD-ROM drive when it's
playing audio CDs.
OK, it's sort of a silly thing to do (perhaps less so for a university
environment, but...), but if you have the opportunity to look at one of these
things, go play with it for a while and you may find that it's really a neat,
fun idea that has a fair amount of consumer appeal (a friend of mine spent
over
an hour on the phone last night trying to convince someone that they shouldn't
hock their PB 160 and buy a Mac TV). Really, execution is pretty slick on this
baby. Anyone else care to comment?

Subject: MacPerl weirdness [Q]
Hi there; here's one for all you Perl fans out there ...
I downloaded the latest release of MacPerl (4.10) late last week to work
on my Powerbook. It's a vast improvement over earlier versions; the
standalone app, in particular, is finally usable (with a built-in
editor and lots of nice features like AppleScript compatability). I'm
really looking forward to writing some simple TCP/IP clients with it.
However, I've got a couple of perplexing problems. Firstly, I'm
running MacTCP 2.0.2 over MacPPP 2.0 to communicate with my IP
provider. I'm not on an ethernet or running MacTCP over appletalk.
On starting up MacPerl, *most* of the time it tries to open PPP
twice. Some of the time, for reasons beyond my ken, it doesn't.
I can't find any options to control this behavior, but it's a pain
in the neck. (On the one hand, I want TCP connections; on the other
hand, I pay by the minute for them so I don't want them when I'm not
using them.)
Rather more serious is a definite repeatable bug. Drag-n-drop
launching of MacPerl scripts works fine. But when I use the Open File
... dialogue MacPerl invariably quits with an error of type 1. I've
messed around with the memory partition size and had a look at the
inits I've got, but I can't isolate anything that causes this (and I
don't know enough about Mac, as opposed to UNIX, programming to look
inside MacPerl).
Anyone got any idea what's going on here?
FYI, the environment is: PB145b 4/80, System 7.1, MacTCP 2.0.2, MacPPP
2.0. Loads of inits and cdevs. (It occurs to me that one possible
culprit in the Open ... bug is an init I use that helps open recently
used folders; I'll check this when I get back to the Mac.)

Hmm, I'll take your word on the TCP/IP driver in 2.5 - I must have
missed that because I have had MacTCP around when using NCSA Telnet.
However, everyone, including the current author, has essentially said
that the SLIP features don't work, so I wouldn't depend on them.

Even a shareware one would do well given the many ways in which Apple

Subject: MacTCP mystery
Hello,
For those who like to curl up with a good mystery, I thought I would share
one of the MacTCP variety that I've been experiencing and see if anyone has
any insights into how this one ends.
The story begins with MacTCP 1.1.1 (I know it's not the latest; our campus
is still negotiating the site licence for 2.0.x) on lab Macs running Telnet
2.5.1, TurboGopher 1.0.7, and Eudora 1.3.1. The really odd part of this is
that the problem I'm about to describe seems to only occur on our lab
machines. I also support around 45 Macs in our administrative office that
use MacTCP 1.1.1, Telnet 1.5.1, TurboGopher 1.0.7, and Eudora 1.3.1 and 1.4
quite regularly but never experience the problem. I've also encountered
the problem when the lab machines were on Appletalk gatewayed to the campus
ethernet via Gatorboxes as well as now when they're directly connected to
the ethernet.
So here it is. About three machines out of 15 a semester develop a problem
with MacTCP so that when you try to bring up Telnet or TurboGopher, you are
told that there is a problem opening the Resolver on Telnet or that
TurboGopher was unable to resolve the host name. What's even weirder is
that Eudora will often continue to work fine!
About half of the time, deleting the MacTCP DNR file and, if present, the
MacTCP Prep file and restarting will clear it up. The rest of the time it
can require deleting those files plus reloading MacTCP from a fresh copy to
get Telnet and TG to work again. Sometimes, even doing this doesn't fix it
and it seems that only restoring the System Folder from a backup corrects
the problem, although recently I discovered that switching MacTCP from
ethernet to Appletalk and back, which requires completely reconfiguring
MacTCP, got it going again without having to replace the entire System
Folder!
I've talked to the support folks for other labs and they report that
they've encountered the same problem and have had to go through similar
steps to get MacTCP to work again, but they haven't been able to determine
what causes this to happen in the first place. In my lab, it seems pretty
random in that different machines are affected by this from semester to
semester.
Has anyone else run into this vexing mystery? If so, does MacTCP 2.0.4 fix
whatever causes it? What is it that causes it and what are some other ways
to prevent it?
Thanks in advance for any insights or clues.
Tim
PS: I don't mind having the ending spoiled on this mystery!

Doesn't surprise me: the LocalTalk and floppy drivers have timing loops

Seriously, even if it didn't do this one thing, Quicken would
still be a keeper. I hope this is not the most important use you
have for it, because it will do so many other great things. It
will ... well, you have the manual, look and see.
Although I have not tried it myself, I believe from my reading of
the manual that Quicken will do what you want. Try entering a
bank fee transaction by hand and then memorize it. Create a new
transaction group and schedule it to "Enter Automatically" every
month on the date of your bank statement (See the Using
Transaction Groups section of Chapter 11). Then select the
aforementioned memorized transaction to be a member of this
group. That should do it, assuming you have the same fixed fee
each month. If it varies, you are stuck with editing the
automatically entered transaction manually to enter the correct
amount.

Can you be more specific? What bugs? I have just upgraded from v.3, and
haven't seen any problems yet (though admittedly, I haven't used v.4 that
much yet). I was always very happy with version 3, and assumed that
version 4 would be quite useful.

... Sorry to disagree, Larry, but I've had a wonderful time with Quicken 4.
In 6 months of use, I've only had one crash, and I didn't lose ANY data.
I've used Q4 on an accelerated MacPlus with Sys7, and on a Quadra 950, and
a couple friends have been using it on Mac IIci's with Daystar PowerCaches and
a Quadra 800, also with no gripes. In fact, we're all quite happy with Q4
and don't hesitate to recommend it to other checkbook-balanced-out Mac users.
It's quite useful, has a ton of neat features, and really makes tracking my
money very easy and efficient. I give Q4 two thumbs up.

Subject: RagTime List? Users? Books? And....The GUS Award
In part because this list has a good international readership, I'm posting
a request here for information about RagTime, an integrated package that
has had little success in the US and much greater success in Europe.
Specifically, I'm looking for lists or usenet groups, and for information
about third-party books.
And speaking of RagTime, I am nominating it for an award that I have
created solely for the purpose, the GUS--greatly underrated software. I
would be delighted to accept, off-list, your own nominations. Laserauthor
and Scoop come to mind as programs that never quite made it off the ground
but that were way ahead of their time. Once I have your nominations, I
will try to find out the story behind why they never really made it. Those
that make good reading will be compiled, as time permits, either into a
series of columns that I will upload to somewhere (ideas?) or make into an
electronic publication.
Thanks for your help on either of these quests.

Hi, fellow netters,
A few days ago, I read an ad about the soon to come PowerPCs saying that the
PowerPC 601 was "60-80 Specmark" fast and that the future PowerPC 620 would be
200 to 400 Specmark capable. Sure, must beat Slowpoke Sam! But how fast is
fast?
Looking in my old dictionary, I could not find neither Specmark nor
Speckmark.
I know it is a kind of processor speed measure, but then? What is exactly a
Specmark? Could you guide me to a table comparing a few machines, old and
actual, giving the Specmark count for each?
Thank you,

I knew what I was buying--I asked what else I got besides DD 4.0 when
I made the order. For the extra $10 I get 1) upgrade from CopyDoubler
Lite to CopyDoubler, and 2) the latest versions of AutoDoubler and
CopyDoubler. Item 2) isn't that big a deal, but two weeks ago my PowerBook
decided to trash the hard disk instead of going to sleep (I hold Norton's
FileSaver suspect and no longer use it on the PB). One of AutoDoubler's
"features" is that if it's restored from a backup disk (a Sysquest in my
case) it complains. Hence, AutoDoubler/CopyDoubler has to be restored from
an original disk and patched again. So, I not only had to dig out the
original AD disk but also a copy of the 2.0.2 patchers for AD and CD.
On the whole, the CD upgrade and latest version seemed worth the $10.
My complaint is being charged for DD 4.0 and receiving 3.7.7 without any
note of explanation. Salient/5th Generation/Symantec may take the
position that they did not intend to create a 'vaporware' situation, and
I'm prepared to concede their good intentions (remembering what the road
to Hell is paved with :) but the fact is they HAVE created a vaporware
situation.
A shrewder marketing move would have been to mail the SuperDoubler
disk with a card saying the upgrade to DD 4.0 would be shipped as soon
as it is ready and the credit card account would NOT be charged until
DD 4 shipped.

First of all, I hope you didn't already own AD 2.0 and CD 2.0 when you
ordered SD, because then you could have just ordered the DD 4.0 upgrade for
$20. If so, FGS/Symantec will let you return it for the DD 4.0 upgrade on
their 1 year MBG.
That aside, here is what is happening (from info found on AOL):
A few weeks ago, Symantec "gobbled up"/merged with Fifth Generation
Systems. This has caused a number of delays in new product releases. FGS
was also supposed to release an upgrade to Public Utilities 2.0, but that
has also been delayed. Since the merger with Symantec, they have had to
re-print manuals, change splash screens and the like within the software,
and also put all if the products through Symantec's quality assurance
procedures. This has caused the delay.
I already owned AD 2.0.2 and CD 2.0.2, so I just ordered the DD 4.0
upgrade. On the other hand, for people that didn't own CD and AD
beforehand, this is a REALLY good deal! Just be patient and your SD 1.0
will be worth it.
By the way, I have no affiliation with FGS/Symantec, except that I happen
to like AD, CD, DD, and PU very much.

The following are bits & pieces from the Fifth Generation Systems support
board on America Online. All are paraphrased by me from comments made by
FGS/Symantec personnel (I apologize if I didnt get something right). The
upshot of it all is that SuperDoubler was heavily delayed by Symantec's
acquisition of Fifth Generation Systems, the previous publisher of
SuperDoubler. DD 4.0 itself was most substantially delayed, but is expected
to be out in early December, and will be sent to all who ordered SD 1.0.

Over in the Fifth Generation forum on AOL, the ubiquitous "THEY" are saying
that DD 4.0 will be out at the beginning of December and will be free to those
of us who bought the SuperDoubler upgrade. "THEY" are also saying that the
delay in the orders comes from FifthGen's merger with Symantec and they have
to redo the documentation somehow. "THEY" are also saying that DD 4.0 will be
the coolest things on wheels, faster, tighter, and easier to use than any
other compression product (kind of a bionic compressor.) That's just what
"THEY" are saying. ("THEY" in this case are the FifthGen tech and marketing
reps in the forum; I'm not using their names because I don't want to
misattribute or put words in their mouths.)
"I" am now saying that I'm with you, Murph; their flyer promised DD 4.0. If
4.0 wasn't ready to ship, they shouldn't have advertised it. I've always
liked Salient/FifthGen and the Doublers, but this whole episode has me a bit
perturbed. The only thing we can hope for is that DD 4.0 is worth the wait.

I'm only moderately perturbed. I DID get a reply from Salient/5th Generation/
Symantec indicating that DD 4.0 would ship to me free when it's really
ready. In the meantime, I did get a CopyDoubler Lite to CopyDoubler
upgrade (I can now copy in background--nice--and get it to say "Makin
Copies" :-)
I guess if I have a complaint it's that my credit card has been billed
for something I haven't received (a payment I have 11 months to cancel).
I think I'll give them the benefit of the doubt; if I haven't received
DD 4.0 by January, I file the form to dispute the payment and get my
money back.

Subject: Watermark software
At a recent BMUG-South meeting, we heard a description of "Working
Watermarker" -- a piece of software from a company called Working Software
that's located in Santa Cruz, CA. It somehow merges a "watermark image"
along with the output of any Mac program with the resulting output appearing
to have been printed on paper with a watermark. Samples passed around
the meeting ranged from utilitarian to humorous. As I understood it, one
can use bundled watermarks (DRAFT, PRIVATE, etc.) or produce your own
>From (possibly) pict or eps files. During our meeting, we were shown a
demo of simulated usage where an app's print dialog box had been
enhanced to include a menu of available watermarks. However, most clubs
don't bring printers to their meetings -- so this was as far as we got.
They also talked about an interesting second product called "Toner Tuner"
which allows one to print draft material at a lower "toner intensity"
which has the net effect of stretching the life of your toner cartridge.
Both products are supposed to run with most products to most printers
(including inkjet printers for the watermark app.) SRPs around $50 for
first product, $25 for the tuner.
The company is at 800.229.9675, CIS 76004,2072, or AppleLink D0140. I've
no connection with them -- just thought they were novel products (almost
mindboggling actually.) Their principal line of business seems to be along
lines of spell checkers and the like.

I asked about file sync software. The freeware and demos in the sumex-aim

File Assistant." I am not in a position to test that recommendation. We

For now I'd really like to hear from any of y'all who use PFA. It got a

why I get the thing freebies. It is worth what I pay.
A thorough review would be most welcome.
